Being a visual merchandiser for over 5 years, I do love my work and enjoy every design I involved. If you ask what I liked most about working in retail, the reason should be that the job is pretty much being in charge of floor sets, setting up mannequins, and displaying anything in the store. Therefore, we would get ready for the new seasons, the holiday season, and set up dummies and new promotional posters in the windows. Basically, our job is just making the store really enticing and very fun to shop.

Seems easy and boring? Not at all. Let's see the definition of visual merchandising.

Definition 1: visual merchandising is the practice in the retail industry of developing floor plans and three-dimensional displays to maximize sales; both goods and services can be displayed to highlight their features and other benefits.

Definition 2: visual merchandisers often work with managers to rearrange fixtures and design the store display to boost sales. It is the job of a visual merchandiser to create a store with color texture and accessory.

In brief, Visual merchandisers use their design skills to help promote the image, products and services of retail businesses and other organizations. They create eye-catching product displays and store layouts and design to attract customers and encourage them to buy.

So in real daily life, my job is to create a store with color texture and accessories. We not only need to set up the floor and make it easy shoppable, but the most important is also that we try to take customers into a whole different world, which is the most creative part that plays in retail. When we pass by a store window, we are always attracted by the window display, the cute mannequin with trendy maxi dress or sandals pad, or maybe whatever you like. There may be just a general explanation that you know it tells a story and inspire you to think of holidays coming around and make you miss the Christmas vibe. The window display gives you the emotional impact to dream and enter a whole different world and finally make you pay for that.

The process of being a merchandiser is a long way. I have my certificate from Parsons Teen Vogue, which I think it helped me a lot with this job opportunity because I've been devoted to it and there is a lot of interesting fundamental things I need to study. Sometimes, people think it's just a retail job and don't consider that as a part of the fashion industry, which may make you feel about to run away, but I think the fashion world is misunderstood mostly time. People just put as much into the store and they have no idea of the importance of display. While it's also enjoyable to study how to display something that you and customers want correctly. It feels like you have a personal take on it, and I could change the store more scientifically and draw the customers in and check out more products.

Basically, that is what a visual merchandiser does in daily work. Jobs are always bittersweet, but for me, being a visual merchandiser is super fun and I love the environment and scenes I created, which could make customers feel at home, comfortable and relaxed. Their satisfaction and smile are the meaning of my tireless efforts.
