Black and White 2

I played Black and White 2 a bit this weekend.

I didn't care for the original Black and White. While the game concept -- you're a god who can choose to be good or evil while leading his people -- was interesting, I found the user interface for navigating the 3D world extremely cumbersome.

B&W2 improves on this (slightly) by utilizing the third mouse button (the scroll wheel) for rotation. Moving around wasn't quite as difficult -- though I would enjoy the game about a thousand times more if it was 2D, top-down.

I sat through the title screens and intro, and then played through the lengthy tutorial. Alas, when the game progressed to the first scenario, it crashed. When I relaunched, it wanted me to go through the tutorial again -- and there was no way to skip it. Ouch! I was going to give up on the game right there, but first I checked the net for a patch. Sure enough, they'd had a few complaints, and the 1.1 patch allowed one to skip the tutorial.

After the patch, while I did manage to skip some things, it wasn't nearly as quick as I wanted to get back to where I was. Eventually, though, I made it to the first scenario, which involved converting several villages to my cause.

It took some time to do so, and frankly didn't seem that interesting or fun. But heck, I'm learning, and it's a big game. Eventually I progressed to level 2 -- or tried to. Once again, the game crashed, and when I restarted it wanted to start me over again at the beginning of the first scenario.

I don't get paid enough to slog through it twice. The end.

Disappointing.

Maybe I'll give it another try after a few more patches come out.
