Derivative Works
In America, one needs permission to create
"derivative works" based on copyrighted material. So I'd need George Lucas's
permission to do a movie set in the Star Wars universe, even if it was made
clear that it had nothing to do with Lucasfilm. The theory is that this somehow
protects the work from being degraded by its descendents -- but perhaps they'd
need to stop George Lucas from beating us to the punch.
